#1 His Sick Mentality, Not Her Short Clothes

“Decent girls do not wear short clothes.”

These were the words his mother said to him when he was just a kid. Not only once, not just twice but every time she came across a girl wearing shorts, skirts, sleeveless dresses etcetera. No matter if she was an actress in a movie, a model in a magazine or a real life college going girl. The words kept repeating as he grew up.

When he was all set to face the real world, he had one thing in his mind, “Decent girls do not wear short clothes.” No matter where he went, he always had this strange feeling against those girls. He never looked upon them with respect and occasionally passed lewd comments as well. For him, they were nothing but a disgrace to Indian morals and society.

Is the character of a girl based on the length of her clothes? If yes, then you need to get yourself checked mentally and if no, then why do the society we live in teach us that? Why is there a sacred line for just girls, crossing which they are titled with lewd remarks?

Even today, I hear so many people accusing the rape victims or the girls who according to those people might be a victim herself in future. The reasons are simple – ‘Why was she roaming in skirts?’, ‘These girls don’t know how to dress’, ‘It was her fault. Her dressing must have provoked the rapist.’, ‘If you are wearing modern outfits, you are provoking guys to rape you’ and there is literally no end.

I rarely find a finger pointing towards the rapist to challenge his sick mentality or towards the society who is cultivating such thoughts in generation to generation. Instead of understanding her mental state and feeling her pain, we often start accusing herself. How is that justified?

I have one simple question. Why does we guys are allowed to wear anything or even flaunt our naked bodies? Can’t the girls be sexually aroused to see the nakedness in the very same manner guys claim to be? Does that mean they have a right to rape any such guy?

We need a change in the society. We need a change in our thoughts. We need to keep our children out of such beliefs. We need to teach them how to respect a woman seeking her character not her clothes. If we keep on repeating the line 'Decent girls do not wear short clothes' forever, how will we ever see a change in mentality? 

Rape is provoked by his Sick Mentality not her Short Clothes.
