I just read about a shocking news through my Facebook feed. A professionally and financially sound 29 years old girl committed suicide. She is the daughter of the principal of DPS, R.K. Puram and has been living with her family in the campus of the school itself. The girl worked as a senior manager for a private firm. She was found hanging with a chunni from the ceiling fan on Tuesday evening by her family.
The very first thought that arises in everybody’s mind is what urged her to take such a step? When I read the reasons, I was shocked. The police found a suicide note where she has not blamed anyone for the reason behind her suicide but when parents were interrogated, a shocking truth came up front.
Reportedly, the issue was her marriage. She was having difficulties finding a partner because she was Manglik (a fault in astrological chart). On the evening of suicide, she had an argument with her family and took this step afterwards. She had been upset for long now as her family continued to visit astrologers for a cure of her astrological faults. They had been advised not to pursue with her wedding with a non-manglik person. This had led to sort of a depression she was facing.
This is not just a story of HER but a story of countless other girls. Even as educated people as her family are found to be knee deep in the stupid traditions and superstitions. And I’m not just talking about the parents of the girls but parents of the guys as well. We have evolved into an era where women have taken up an equal stand with the men. Girls are having successful careers and are standing independent. But even then, some idiotic superstitions hinder in their way to lead a happy life. Why?
The police are still interrogating and suspect that there might be a guy in the picture and this astrological thing might just be a cover. Or it can be possible that the guy was not a manglik which was creating a hindrance in their marriage.
There can be several hidden folds to the case and they shall be uncovered in due time. But a successful girl had to lose her life due to something that was not her fault and something that does not materialize as relevant.
“FAMILY! It is a well-educated family trapped in moronic traditions. It is your support system. If it becomes the cause of trouble where else the person would look for support. They would have easily supported her through this. Discarding this sickening rituals & making her stronger. Instead they chose to play along & pressurized the girl in committing suicide,” a fellow blogger Garima said in her opinion.
I agree with her opinion. Superstitions and traditions are still deep rooted in our so called modern society. People are blindly following everything without taking in consent the amount pressure they are putting on their very own beloved child. I’m just talking about the ‘Kundali Dosh’ here but there are so many other issues that pressurizes teens even if they are practically perfect. Despite of so many similar cases happening and while people reacts with ‘Oh’ and ‘Shit’ and offers sympathy to the departed soul, they continue to practice same ideologies themselves and put their children under the same forgetting what the consequences can be.
Help your child. Understand your child. Try to picture yourself in her place. Try to figure out what she might be going through. Family is important to everybody. A child can give away the world for them. But where should a child look for if the family itself fails to understand?

Write commentsi agree with you, some beliefs that are deep rooted are really mindless. i am a maanglik too and sometimes (relatives) old ladies and those with orthodox traditional thinking look at my kundali as if it'll attack them if they'll get too close to it :P

How sad. Religion and traditions seem to do nothing but hinder people from living full and productive lives. When a family fails in their support, their offspring is left with nowhere to find peace.

India had to lose another "educated" lady.
That's such a sad story about how traditions and superstitions can lead to such a thing. I feel for the family. It's a shame they couldn't offer her the support she so desperately needed.

ReplyHmm probably my generation can bring about a certain amount of change. But still that will be a slow progress as many of my generation people are also following the traditions that are capable of giving birth to such cases.

ReplyYeah. Parents should broaden their mind and try to understand their children. Even parents can be wrong at certain things and they must acknowledge the fact. We don't know what happened for sure but most of the times it reveals out to be the same case.
