The story begins with a ninety year old man Ira stuck in his car after his car crashed on an isolated road. While drifting through consciousness, he finds the vision of his beloved wife Ruth who had died earlier. He relives their life together as a couple through the vision and recounts numerous memorable moments.

At some other place, a young art history major girl Sophia who has fallen in love with a cowboy named Luke. Being from different backgrounds and having different aspirations and dreams, there relation is not an easy one to maintain.

The two love stories meet with shocking disclosures and emotional build ups.

The Longest Ride was surely quite long a tale but Sparks had his reasons. There were two stories to be accumulated within one novel. It was a difficult task to knit two full fledge sets of stories occurring at a different time and place between different generations of people but he has done it nicely.

But still, the length of The Longest Ride made it stretchy at many places. The characters are different, the setting is different, the stories are different and thus it was difficult to submerge deeply into any of the characters. At least it was for me. I did not particularly find the character of Sophia much interesting. Also, the country stuff was not for me.

There were many heartwarming as well as cute moments in The Longest Ride and that is the reason I have been fond of Nicholas Sparks. However most of them found place in the story of Ruth and Ira. Especially the letters some of which even made my eyes wet. The guy is genius when it comes to knitting heart wrenching emotions.

But for the reasons I have told earlier, I did not find The Longest Ride as appealing as the other books I have read from the author. There are plenty of things that appears forced just to move the story as desired. I was expecting a lot but I have to find solace in just saying that the book was a sweet and an emotional read. It is worth reading but it is nothing exceptional.
